Interpreting Relations IV is part of a series of videos that continues Leung’s research into the relationship between migration, labour and technology. It features chimeras with varying degrees of organism, human and machine. The work draws on Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto and it’s sequel Staying with the Troubles. In Staying with the Trouble, Haraway argues for replacing 'human relations' with 'kin’, where kin is encompassing all other planetary organisms, all nonhuman relations. ‘Kin’ arguably brings about a transformation in our hierarchies and priorities. Bringing to the front, both human and non-human displacement. The digital artefacts and low resolution provide clues to how the images were made. The video series have been made using Artbreeder, an AI powered platform that uses Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) models, a type of unsupervised learning task in machine learning. It involves the model discovering and learning the patterns in input data to such an extent that it can be used to generate new examples that plausibly could have been from the original dataset. GANs have commonly been used to generate photorealistic photos of objects, scenes and people that even humans find hard to differentiate. The tool is used in the context of human-AI collaboration, labour and value production.
